Ricky Taylor Basketball Professional Skills Camp Itinerary

For Grades K-12 and College Players! A Camp Designed for Players, Parents, and Coaches!

*VIP (Very Important Parents) – Able to attend all sessions!  Great for parents looking to learn what is being taught in our sessions to further discuss with child after camp. VIP parents is great for players who don’t have transportation for lunch.

CAMP SCHEDULE – Saturday, August 25 from 9:00am-8:00pm

Sunday, August 26 from 9:00am-5:00pm


9:00am – 9:30am (Players & Parents) – Check-In/Registration of Attendance – All players will have to register online in order to attend the camp so that we can have a faster check in!

9:30am – 9:45am (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) – Welcome & Stretching (All Grades)

9:50am – 10:00am (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) The Importance of Changing Your Mentality & Approach to the Game – Players will learn how to mentally prepare for games and practices. Players will learn the value of having a consistent work ethic to position themselves to reach their potential.  Players will be taught the principles of discipline, commitment, promptness, character, and integrity on and off the court.

How to Increase Your Confidence – The coaching staff will share personal experiences how they were able to increase their confidence over the years by being consistent with workouts.


Physical – Having the Basketball Edge

10:00am – 10:45pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) –How to Increase Your Scoring Average, How to Speed Up Your Shot, How to Get More Shot Attempts In A Game, Embracing the Triple Threat, Knowing the Difference Between a Scorer and A Shooter – In this powerful session Coach Ricky Taylor will provide tools and resources on how to increase your scoring average!  Players will be taught some of the secrets how to get up more attempts by being in a shot ready position to ultimately position themselves to score more points.  This session will focus on the complete basketball player – finishing, shooting off the dribble, shooting off the catch, moves on the move, and much more!

Finishing – In order to increase your scoring average, players will be educated on what an NBA layup consists of and how to apply it to their games. Players will learn about timing their defenders’ momentum to distinguish which move is the best move to use for that given situation. Players will be taught how to finish through traffic to prepare them for early, late, moving defenders, and the second line of defense. Players will be taught the football cuffing method, euro steps, spins, low scoops, floaters, and armpit cuffs used to protect the ball when finishing.

Shooting Off the Dribble – This master session will focus on having a strong foundation to shooting off the dribble in the mid-range and 3-point areas. Players will be taught the 1-2 step, the hop, the step back, the same foot step back.  Players will also learn how to read defenders whether to use the first step explosion or cross step.

Shooting Off the Catch – In this session players will learn the importance of shooting off the catch while moving. Coaches will share their personal experiences on which footwork is best to use. Players will be taught the importance of having balance while coming off down screens, flares, and transition shooting.

Moves on the Move – Players will learn some of the best moves on the moves to use when attacking a defender on the move in the open court.  Players will learn how to analyze their defenders early to help determine which move is best for them.  Player will also learn the importance of dribble utilization to ensure that they maximize each dribble taken when attacking the goal.

10:45am – 11:00am (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) – Excelling in the Classroom – The Importance of Academics/Having a Backup Plan – In addition to excelling on the basketball court, players must be able to excel in the classroom.  This session will teach players the importance on excelling in the classroom to receive academic scholarships.  Only 5.7% of male high school students play at the collegiate level and only 6.2% of female high school students play at the collegiate level.  This session will encourage athletes to take their academics seriously and always be conscious of having a backup plan.

11:05am – 11:40am (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) – How to Get Your Handles On A String? Players will be put through an advanced ball handling workout where they will learn how to change different speeds of their dribble to ultimately increase their hand speed and improve overall basketball handles. Players will also learn the most effective drills to work on right before games and at home.

11:40am – 11:55am – The Importance of Strength & Conditioning (Getting in the Weight Room) – If athletes want to perform at their best potential, athletes must make the sacrifice to get stronger, faster, and quicker with strength & conditioning to maximize game performance.  This session will advise athletes on the importance of getting stronger and being in top shape.  This class will teach athletes how to gain a killer instinct, increase confidence, and be able to finish with contact.

Having the Proper Diet (What to Eat Before & After Games) – In order for athletes to maximize their performance, athletes must take care of their bodies by eating healthy.  This session will provide a list of the different types of food that will increase energy levels while playing.  This class will show you what unhealthy foods can do to your game performance.

12:00pm – 12:55pm – Lunch Parents are free to take players to go get food or have food for them on site). Players who finish lunch early are encouraged to lay out in the gym to rest for the next session.


College Recruiting

1:00pm – 1:15pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) What College Coaches Are Looking for in a Player? – There are parents and players who may not understand what it ultimately takes to receive a phone call or a letter from a college institution.  This session is designed to inform players on what college coaches are looking for in a player (size, shooting ability, game I.Q., skillset, etc.). Attendees will leave with a better understanding on what to work on to receive a call from a college coach. Parents and players will also be taught how not to overlook other schools (Division II, Division III, NAIA, NJCAA).  This session will encourage players that there is nothing wrong with playing at a Division II, Division III, NAIA, or NJCAA institution.

How to Get A College Basketball Scholarship? Attendees will learn about the importance of establishing a known name in your city.  Players will learn about the importance of being in the local newspaper and establishing a name in your local community, region, and state level.

What to Do If You Don’t Receive A Scholarship? Players will be taught alternate methods you can use to possibly make a collegiate team.  Players will learn about walking on and becoming a gym manger.

1:20pm – 1:45pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) How to Sharpen your I.Q. of the Game – In this session, players will learn about taking their I.Q. to the next level.  Players will learn the proper way to pass and cut, flash to open spots, drift and lift, set down screens, back screens, screen aways, and flares. Players will learn how to exploit the pick and roll.


1:45pm – 2:00pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) How to Pray, How to Increase to Your Relationship with God, How to Study the Bible – In our spirituality class, players will learn how to pray, increase their relationship with God, and learn how to study the Bible.  Player will learn about adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication.  Players will be encouraged to have a developing relationship with God throughout their lives.

2:05pm – 2:40pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) – Post Development for Posts and Why Guards Should Have A Post-Up Game – In this session, all posts and guards will learn the importance of having a post-up game regardless of size.  Players will be taught how to post up with their back to the basket and have a face up game.  Players should leave with a better understanding how the post-up game will help to execute on the perimeter.


Real Estate, Entrepreneurship, Money Management

2:05pm – 2:45pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) – How to Strategically Purchase Your Child’s First Home As Soon As They Graduate from College – A class specifically created for parents and players, players will learn about the difference between depreciating and appreciating assets. Players will be taught the importance of home ownership and how you can be a home owner early in life.  Parents, you will be introduced to new ways how you can help your child purchase their first home.

How to Start Your Own Business – In this session, players will have a walk through on steps they will need to start their own business.  Players will learn about professionalism, communication, the standard of excellence, accounting, marketing, branding, websites, business cards, letterheads, table cloths, retractable banners, business email addresses, business phone numbers, and business addresses.

How to Build Wealth Money Management In this session, players will learn the discipline of saving and investing money.

2:50pm – 3:30pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) – Transition Scoring How to Score in the Open Court – In this on the court session, players will be taught to play with controlled speed and knowing when to attack and where to attack. Players will learn about proper spacing and sprinting the floor to become a decoy for the team.

3:35pm – 4:00pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) – How to Increasing Your Scoring Average from Coach Ricky’s Book Double My Scoring Average, How to Increase Your Assists, Analyzing Film, How to Increase Your Rebounding, Developing A Strong I.Q. – In this session, Coach Ricky Taylor will walk players down his journey on what he did in order to double his scoring average in high school from 11.4ppg to 25.0ppg to become an All-State basketball player.  He will also tell players how he doubled his scoring average from 11.7ppg to 26.2ppg while playing professionally in Europe.

4:05pm – 4:30pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) – The Excellency of Passing – How to Take Pride in Every Pass – In this session, players will be taught to pass the ball will accuracy and precision.  Players will be put through passing drills in which they will learn how to accurately pass the ball to their teammates shot pocket, make the appropriate bounce pass, see the skip pass, and shift sides of the court.

4:30pm – 5:00pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) What Does It Take to Become A Professional Basketball Player – In this session, professional players will share what it actually takes to become a pro.  This session will deal with collegiate stats, why most bigs get better pro deals than guards, agents, contracts, playing professionally and obtaining a masters degree, overseas experience (communication, life away from home, etc), termination if you don’t perform, and flights.

5:00pm – 5:55pm (Dinner)



6:00pm – 6:45pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) Different Types of Defenses – In this session players will learn how to play denying defense, help defense through shell drill, knowing how to guard a down screen from the guard and post position, how to guard the post by having a high hand and fronting while being physical, pick and roll defense, and transition defense.

6:45pm – 7:15pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) How to Attack A Zone and Discover the Weak Spots – In this session players will learn about ball fakes, flashing to the high post, finding the short corner, and diving.  Players will be taught how to get in their teammates window to make a better passing angle.

How to Respond to Adversity

7:20pm – 7:40pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) – How to Respond When You Don’t Receive Playing Time, Don’t Get Enough Minutes, or Don’t Make the Team – In this session, players will learn how to respond to adversity when tough times come.  Players will be encouraged to stay positive despite what goes on before, during, or after the season.  Players will be taught to think in the long-term to ultimately stay positive.

7:40pm – 8:00pm (Players, Coaches & VIP Parents) – The Importance of Investing in Your Game – In this session, players will be encouraged to invest in their game by finding a professional skills trainer, purchasing books/dvds, attending college/pro camps, etc.  Parents will also learn about the difference between AAU and skill development.

8:00pm – End of Camp




SHOWCASE SCHEDULE – Sunday, August 26 from 1:00pm-5:00pm

9:00am -11:00am Worship at Arena of Praise – Service will be held inside Orchard Knob Elementary School, 2000 E 3rd Street Chattanooga, TN

11:00am – 12:55pm – Lunch

1:00pm -4:45pm 5 on 5 Play – Players will compete against each other while the coaches will help mentor players while playing.

4:45pm- 5:00pm – Closing Remarks

5:00pm – End of Camp
